Playing with nature - Earth Art Festival in Pingtung, Taiwan

Three years ago, Dacheng Art Experimental Elementary School transitioned from a "regular school" to an experimental one, successfully averting closure due to a declining student population. Today, it has become a school with a waiting list for enrollment. This year, the school harnessed the community's cohesion to host Taiwan's first event that integrates primary education with an Earth Art Festival.

Artists from Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, Belgium, and Taiwan have been invited to use local natural materials to create artwork on the campus and in the surrounding areas. The opening day of the Earth Art Festival is December 14, 2024, and I warmly welcome everyone to attend!

Text by Georgios Papadopoulos

For over fifteen years, Meng-Chan Yu has been refining her artistic practice, transitioning from pottery and ceramics to land art and eco-criticism. She employs innovative techniques to incorporate soil as the central element of her artistic expression. Meng-Chan has perfected a method for creating a spectrum of colors by mixing different kinds of soil, capturing and representing the essence of the places from which the soil is sourced.

Soil is a powerful storyteller, documenting regional characteristics and serving as a fundamental component of life. In her exhibition at [SiC] Meng-Chan explores and visualizes our connection to the natural world, following the trajectory of a silvery leaf that has drifted from its parent olive tree to touch the soil. Her work challenges us to reconsider our relationships to non-human life forms and natural processes, and to contemplate the cyclical nature of organic matter.

Cyclicality prompts a profound existential inquiry. What is our origin and what is our future? Soil embodies both life and death—it nurtures plants, sustains various life forms, and enhances recomposition. In our living environment, matter and energy circulate silently. When life ends and organic matter is segregated from the body in order to be converted and reused. The silvery leaf already knows that cyclicality is crucial to life, both human and non-human, so fearlessly it abandons the tree in order to touch the soil.

Meng-Chan Yu's exhibition is the culmination of her two months residency in [SiC] supported by the Art Futures an international non-profit organization that supports and initiates activities with an unconditional belief in the value of the arts, culture and education. [SiC] Space for International Cooperation, is an independent, non-for profit, project-space in the heart of Athens. Privately run, international.

Welcome!

Which natural elements are essential for human survival? I connect soil to market vendors, fruit trees, forests, soil microorganisms, and the universe. The diverse combinations of soil and climate in different regions produce various agricultural products and ecosystems, inspiring the development of human cultures. Tracing back from the rich humanities appearance to the soil, I use soil-made images to reflect the local environment and simultaneously aim to communicate with people across regions.
